Turkey Trots have been a holiday tradition for runners and their families across the United States since 1895, with more Americans participating in an organized running event on Thanksgiving Day than on any other day of the year. As the first and longest-running “Turkey Trot” in Dare County, the Annual ADVICE 5K Turkey Trot is as traditional as Pumpkin Pie! Our family and community tradition is for all ages and abilities...a non-sanctioned 5K loop, beginning on Scarborough Lane and finishing up with some BIG FUN! We're "old school" -- NOT professionally timed or chipped, with finish times monitored only until our "Pie Winners" cross the Finish Line!
Our INFAMOUS PUMPKIN "TROPHY PIES" (made by baker-extraordinaire Chris Carroll of Sweater Box Confections) are awarded to our first female & male runners (both adult & youth U10) along with our first walker. There are no other competitive awards or age group recognitions for our event. Our event is all about FUN & PHILANTHROPY -- with net proceeds growing a permanent charitable endowment established in our name (the Annual ADVICE 5K Turkey Trot Fund). The endowment is managed by the Outer Banks Community Foundation to assure that community health projects benefiting the Outer Banks will forever be funded.
After having to cancel our event in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are working hard to get our event back up and running in 2021! After all, we've got a 25th Anniversary to celebrate!
